Ramanujam's Basava

"The sacrificial lamb brought for the festival
ate up the green leaf brought for the decorations

Not knowing a thing about the kill,
it wants only to fill its belly:
born that day, to die that day."

This English translation is alluring and alludes to a meaning that is different than it was actually penned for in Kannada. Not that i know Kannada but the notes that came with the original poem quite positively affirms the fact these lines are a sarcastic take on animal sacrifice. Whatever, the lines somehow collude that the sacrificial lamb is the human being, festival the life and all he wants to do is to fill up his belly pretending that death will be easy on him, maybe even miss him!
